My story is one shared by many artists who have embarked on a journey in search of Atelier education. Despite attending art classes at the University and Art College, I still struggled to accurately represent nature in my drawings and paintings. It was incredibly frustrating not being able to draw an accurate portrait, human form, or landscape with the utmost integrity and fidelity to nature.

At the age of 17, my quest for knowledge began. I tirelessly searched art galleries and sought guidance from teachers and artists to learn representational art. Unfortunately, back then, there was no internet or readily available information on reliable teachers.

After many decades of searching, I finally found a few teachers who could assist me. I learned valuable lessons in drawing and painting from Grace Cole and Nylda Rykucher. However, the majority of my training came from The Ravenswood Atelier, where I had the privilege of learning from two extraordinary artist-teachers: Matt and Magda Almy. To this day, I continue my training at The Ravenswood Atelier because my pursuit of education in Academic Representational art is an ongoing endeavor that I can never get enough of.

19th Century Drawing and Painting Class

This course is designed for individuals seeking instruction in representational drawing and painting, following the academic tradition of the 19th century. We will primarily focus on the Charles Bargue and Jean-Leon Gerome Drawing Course, as well as cast drawing.

Throughout the course, we will emphasize the technique of site size, which involves creating artwork at the same size as the subject. Advancement to higher levels will be based on merit, ensuring that your progress aligns with your skills and dedication. Upon completion of the drawing  course  the student will move on to Grisaille  oil painting and then eventually to full color oil painting. This is the normal sequential progression.

It's worth noting that this type of instruction is not commonly taught in contemporary  art schools today.  My aim is to provide a unique and enriching experience that delves into the techniques and principles of classical art. To represent nature in the truest and most beautiful representational art work
